Parliament Speaker: Japan Should Immediately Unfreeze Iran's Assets
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf in a meeting with Japan's Foreign Minister in Tehran underlined that Tokyo should take immediate and serious action to unfreeze Iran’s assets blocked in Japanese banks.
"Relations between the two countries of Iran and Japan should be defined based on a long-term roadmap and Japan needs to react seriously with regards to the pharmaceutical and medicine-related sanctions imposed against Iran," Qalibaf said during the meeting in the Iranian capital on Sunday.
The Iranian parliament speaker reiterated that Japan must take urgent action in unfreezing Iranian assets blocked in that country.
Qalibaf, meantime, thanked the Japanese government for donating coronavirus vaccine to Iran to help the country in the fight against coronavirus pandemic.
"The humanitarian cooperation between the two countries of Iran and Japan in various fields is a symbol of friendship between governments and people of the two countries," he addede.
Japanese foreign minister, for his part, said that the Japanese parliament is vehemently interested in developing ties with Iranian Parliament.
“We hope that in the coming days, webinars will be held between heads of parliamentary friendship groups of the two sides," Motegi emphasized.
Referring to to the donation of COVID-19 vaccine by Japan to Iran, the visiting Japanese foreign minister said that Japan’s assistance to Iranian people during the outbreak of pandemic indicates depth of friendly ties between Japan and Iran.
In relevant remarks earlier on Sunday, Iranian President Seyed Ebrahim Rayeesi called on Japan to Immediately free his country’s frozen assets, saying that no delay is acceptable.
Rayeesi made the remarks in a meeting with the Japanese foreign minister in Tehran on Sunday. He appreciated Japan's humanitarian assistance to Iran in the fight against Coronavirus, and expressed the hope that continued cooperation between the two countries in this field would help eradicate the global coronavirus disease in both countries and the world.
Rayeesi stressed the need to free Iran's financial resources in Japan, and noted that any delay in the release of Iranian assets in Japanese banks is not justifiable to Iran.
