Restocking lifts Indian coking coal imports in 2019-20
Indian coking coal imports moving through 12 key state-controlled ports rose slightly from a year earlier during April 2019 to March 2020, as restocking initially accelerated but tapered off amid port closures as the Covid-19 outbreak worsened in India and lockdowns were imposed.
India imported 56.9mn t in the 2019-20 fiscal year starting 1 April, up by 2pc from the same period last year, according to data from the Indian Ports Association (IPA).
The IPA data do not include a breakdown of which countries exported coking coal to India. Only nine of the 12 ports covered by the IPA data received coking coal shipments in the April-March period.
The port of Kolkata received the largest coking coal imports with 17.7mn t, down by 13pc from a year earlier. The total included 15.5mn t received at Haldia and 2.2mn t arriving at the Kolkata Dock System.
Coking coal arrivals at Paradip were 12.2mn t during April-March, down by 4pc from the same period a year earlier. Imports at Mormugao in Goa state rose by 30pc against the previous year to 7.9mn t, while volumes at the port of Visakhapatnam also rose by 25pc to 7.7mn t over the same period.
Imports at Chidambaranar, Tamil Nadu were 6.1mn t, while volumes at Mumbai and New Mangalore were 2.6mn t and 884,000t respectively.
The port of Ennore received 953,000t of coking coal, while Deendayal imported 994,000t. The ports of Chennai, Cochin and Jawaharla Nehru did not take any coking coal imports over the period
