Iran has banned Boeing 737 Max 8 and 9 from its airspace due to safety concerns raised following the deadly crash of an Ethiopian Airlines flight last week.

Reza Jafarzadeh, Iran's Civil Aviation Organization spokesperson, confirmed the ban, according to the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development's news outlet.

Iran's decision comes after several other countries have moved to ground 737max jets.

No Iranian airline operates 737 Max planes.

The plane accounted for the largest portion of Iranian airliners' orders after the 2016 implementation of the nuclear deal Iran signed with world powers a year earlier.

Iran Air's contract with Boeing for 80 brand-new jets included 50 of the plane. Iran Asmean Airline also had firm contract for 30+30 737 Max planes. Both deals have been suspended following the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear deal last year.
