Launched! New AlCircle Report on “Red Mud (Bauxite Residue) Management: Storage & Valorisation”

AlCircle has again come up with an informative report “Red Mud (Bauxite Residue) Management: Storage & Valorisation” to provide a comprehensive, in-depth study on red mud generation, processing, disposal/storage to various valorisation aspects including material extraction and usage in various end-applications.
Launched! New AlCircle Report on “Red Mud (Bauxite Residue) Management: Storage & Valorisation”

While aluminium as a green metal is offering a wide range of benefits in numerous applications, a concern is arousing over issues surrounding red mud (bauxite residue), which is a slurry by-product formed during the production of alumina, the key raw material for producing aluminium, from bauxite through the Bayer process.

Depending on the ore grade, around 4 to 6 tonnes of bauxite is required to produce 2 tonnes of alumina, which in turn provides 1 tonne of aluminium. For each tonne of alumina produced, around 1 to 1.5 tonne of red mud (bauxite residue/red sand) is generated.

The risk of environment hazards from red mud and the recent incidents of red mud spillage from residue ponds are creating panic among people regarding bauxite residues. However, the toxicity of red mud should be related to the disposal method practised.  It is high time that the industry creates awareness and provides correct information about red mud management. The report is throwing light on a number of factors regarding processing, storage, neutralisation and remediation / rehabilitation of red mud supported by case studies derived from the major alumina producers in the world.

For providing further details, this report also covers year wise and region wise red mud generation, including some of the major alumina producing countries like China, Australia, Brazil, India, Russia, and Jamaica. The report discusses how various organizations are looking beyond storage and disposal of red mud and investing on projects for re-utilizations of the residues and also the commercial viability of such projects.

In a nutshell, the report covers the following points:

  • Bauxite reserves and mining trend
  • Bauxite quality, Characteristics of bauxite deposits
  • Alumina production trends and key producers
  • Upcoming bauxite and alumina projects
  • An introduction to red mud
  • Alumina production process
  • Composition of red mud (physical and chemical properties
  • Is red mud hazardous?
  • Major incidents of red mud spillage in recent years
  • Remediation / rehabilitation of red mud
  • Red mud generation region-wise
  • Utilisation of red mud (valorisation)
  • Recovery of components from red mud
  • Red Mud Applications
  • Select alumina producers & red mud management / utilisation
