In 2018, alumina refineries in the world generated around 154 million tonnes of red mud while producing 130 million tonnes of alumina. Red mud or bauxite residue has remained one of the biggest challenges for the aluminium industry since its inception. The risk of environment hazards from red mud and the recent incidents of red mud spillage from residue ponds are creating grave concern for the refineries, the communities living around a refinery and the environmentalists.
