SPD 9 Platform Resumes Production

Gas production at one of the platforms of the giant South Pars Gas Field off the Persian Gulf, which had been damaged, has been fully repaired, the operations manager of Pars Oil and Gas Company said.

SPD 9 from phases 6-8 caught fire in June due to gas leakage. Although the fire was contained soon and there were no casualties, repair work took about 4 months, the Oil Ministry news agency Shana reported Alireza Ebadi as saying.

“Repairs are over and it can produce natural gas from the offshore field at full capacity of 28 million cubic meters a day,” he said.

South Pars is the world's largest gas field, shared between Iran and Qatar, stretching 3,700 square kilometers of Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. The reservoir is being developed in 24 phases.

With new platforms ready by the yearend (March 2020), 70 mcm of gas per day will be added to SP’s daily production.

Iran has plans to produce over 750 mcm of natural gas from South Pars by March 2021. More than $72 billion has been spent on the giant energy venture since work started and investments are forecast to rise to $87 billion.
